MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL, DENIS GROS-LOUIS
NEWS FROM THE GENERAL MANAGEMENT

General Assembly and
Special General Assembly

On April 21 and 22, 2026, the Chiefs and representatives of FNEC member communities convened a Special General Assembly to provide the FNEC with key mandates for the renewal of the Regional Education Agreement (REA), which is set to expire in 2027. Three resolutions were adopted at this time:

· R26-01: A mandate to submit a proposal to renew the REA for an additional 10 years, in order to ensure the sustainability of the Agreement’s significant outcomes, better align it with educational cycles (primary and secondary education) and support long-term planning.

· R26-02: The Chiefs Committee provides the FNEC and its member communities with strategic direction with regard to education. Given the accelerated federal budget cycle, an agreement in principle must be submitted to Indigenous Services Canada as soon as possible. To meet the required deadline, member communities
have delegated the responsibility of signing
the agreement in principle to the Chiefs Committee.

· R26-03: The communities reaffirmed that they never ceded
their rights in matters of education and cultural transmission, and confirmed that the FNEC Secretariat and its staff fall under federal
jurisdiction for the purposes of labour relations within the Secretariat.

Participation in the Québec Solidaire Conference

On May 8-10, FNEC staff members were invited to observe the Québec Solidaire Electoral Platform Conference in Montreal. This was an opportunity to learn more about Québec Solidaire’s policies and key initiatives, particularly in relation to education. As the provincial election draws near, the FNEC is actively engaged in Quebec’s political dialogue to raise awareness of the educational realities facing First Nations. We continue to follow parties’ positions on education matters for the benefit of the students and communities that we represent.

Working Meeting of the National Indian Education Council of the Assembly of First Nations in Wendake

The members of the Assembly of First Nation’s National Indian Education Council (NIEC) met on April 29 and 30 in Wendake to continue their ongoing work on critical educational issues, such as access to education, academic success and funding in the areas of primary education through to adult education as well as related infrastructure. On April 30, we had the pleasure of welcoming them to our offices. Dialogue between Council members is critical to reinforce our collaboration and advance concrete solutions that are anchored in the realities of our communities. Our Director General, Mr. Denis Gros-Louis, is our regional NIEC representative.

NEWS FROM THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
Directors of Education Gathering

At the request of the directors of education, the FNEC held a special gathering for them under the theme “Leading at the Height of the Eagle.” This gathering was an opportunity for education directors to reflect on their role, share experiences and focus on the essentials.

The discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration, the feeling of belonging and the impact of leadership on the well-being and success of students and staff. Each participant left with a clear intention and a tangible action to implement.

Thanks to the education directors for their presence and engagement. Your discussions nourished a forward-looking reflection and strengthened our common desire to promote First Nations languages, culture and well-being in our communities.

Elders Meeting

In the last few weeks, the House of Knowledge team has held two Elders Meetings with members of different First Peoples Nations. These discussions, grounded in listening and respect, stimulated reflections on a university developed by and for First Peoples, rooted in our values, our languages and our knowledge.

These meetings are a reminder that the House of Knowledge is much more than a university project. It is space in the making, carried by strong voices, a collective responsibility and a common desire to build a sustainable educational community for the communities and the generations to come. The participants generously shared their thoughts and opinions, which will continue to foster this collective reflection, founded on respect, recognition and shared responsibility.

Inauguration of Meeting Rooms

On April 13, the FNEC inaugurated its new meeting rooms, a highly symbolic moment that also marked the end of its 40th anniversary celebrations. This inauguration was in line with an organizational knowledge approach to honour the four people whose profound engagement has marked the FNEC’s foundation, history and development. The four honourees are John Martin and Eddie Cross, founding members in 1985, Raymond Sioui, former assistant director of operations, and Linda Simon, whose contribution was pivotal in the development of the Regional Education Agreement.

By naming these rooms after these inspiring people, the FNEC would like to honour their heritage and reinforce their values of leadership, courage and commitment, which continue to guide its actions in education for the educational success of First Nations learners.

The event was held in the presence of the families, in a climate of respect, recognition and emotion.

NEWS FROM KIUNA

On May 12, Kiuna held its Méritas awards to recognize the perseverance of students enrolled in the 2026 winter semester.

Students, families, and staff members all joined together at noon to gather around a meal and attend the ceremony, all free of charge. In addition, since this event was part of Police Week, members of the Odanak Police Department were on hand to chat with students over coffee and dessert.

The event was a great success and provided an opportunity to recognize the students’ efforts and achievements in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We wish you a wonderful end to the semester and look forward to seeing you again in August for the fall 2026 semester!
