March break is already here! We have been preoccupied by several recent events, including the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in First Nations communities, the FNEC’s education symposium for its French-speaking members, Laval University’s action plan for First Peoples, and a warming tent set up in Cabot Square in honour of Raphaël André, one of our Innu brothers living among the homeless population in Montréal, who died in inhumane conditions.

Federal Relations

Canada is committed to transforming First Nations education in support of the complete takeover of education by First Nations. On the path toward reconciliation, two new federal agencies were created in 2017 to help achieve Indigenous self-government.

Provincial Relations

Several key issues related to First Nations student success are being discussed with Quebec’s Indigenous affairs office. One of these issues we are focussing in particular is the review of the Charter of the French Language. The FNEC is working in accordance with the chiefs’ instructions to eliminate barriers to First Nations student success.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - CONSEIL SUPÉRIEUR DE L'ÉDUCATION

As part of a series of meetings the Conseil supérieur de l’éducation is holding with Indigenous education organizations, the FNEC director general recently sat down with the president of the Conseil to discuss the provincial government’s commitment to greater representation of Indigenous realities and concerns in education.

PINK SHIRT DAY 2021

The FNEC is proud to have participated in Pink Shirt Day 2021 by taking a stand against bullying and wearing pink shirts to show support for the cause. In addition, the FNEC is the happy recipient of the fundraiser organized by Bureau en Gros for the Quebec province division. As a result, more than 4,000 pink shirts were sold in our communities, for each of which 1$ will be donated to us to organize
anti-bullying activities.

KIUNA INSTITUTION

Kiuna, the only First Nations college in Quebec, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. In honour of this milestone, we are sharing a few highlights from the last ten years. This will be a trip down memory lane for our partners past and present, and will hopefully extend our outreach to those who would like to get to know us.
